This is my very own space, where I can wax lyrical about my thoughts on learning
and development, and share with you my own perspective on life, the universe and
all things training. I’ve no idea what I’ll include in
future blog entries, but
my hope is that they will be thought provoking and topical. I also hope to generate
debate and reaction – after all, I’ll be sharing my very personal views (or being
deliberately contentious) and there’s absolutely no reason why you should agree
with me!
I think I’ve been allowed this space in the hope that it will stop me interfering
elsewhere. A noble, but possibly ultimately fruitless goal, as I always have a very
clear idea of what I want and find it hard not to involve myself in everything!
Luckily however, I’m not always clear at explaining what I want to others.
Now, as you will no doubt have noticed, we’ve got a new, fresh look, which in large part is due to our new Design Manager, Tanya.
The benefits of being vague were brought home to me recently when I asked Tanya
to design a graphic for the ‘Passions’ page in the new Glasstap website. I had a
clear idea of what I wanted. Luckily for me, Tanya didn’t, as I’d not been able
to vocalise my idea clearly over the telephone. The end result is a thousand times
better than the image I had in my mind. What did I learn from this? That whilst it’s important to agree objectives that are specific, making them too detailed can
remove from people the opportunity to create an outcome that they truly own and
which is more creative and, frankly, better than the one you ‘wanted’.
Now, I’ve already exceeded my 200 word allowance, so I’ll just conclude by wishing
our new editor Lou, who’ll be working with Tanya on the rest of the newsletter,
all the best, and by suggesting you check out Tanya’s fantastic Passions graphic
on www.glasstap.com.
