I've found that when you ask people about development they automatically think training course. We've got lots of great self study tools available (ranging from books to interactive CD Roms) but the uptake could be better. Unfortuantely, we don't luxury's like a LMS or intranet to utilise.
Many thanks

Hi Wenda

Thanks for your response. We ran 'Learning at Work' day for 3 years, it was fun... I would liked to have seen take up much better though. My advice would be to get total buy in from your senior team and encourage them to influence their own teams to attend sessions.

Good Luck

Hi Gill,
I have a similar situation. Thanks to others for their posts, and Id add that Im currently putting together a plan for Learning at Work Day (17May 2012) promoted by the campiagn for Learning. Im attending a seminar on 1st March in Birmingham to hear other organisations successes from previous years, ideas for promotion, and changing the view of learning in the workplace. Their website also gives loads of interesting and useful resources to promote learning in the workplace. www.campaignforlearning.org.uk. Maybe I'll see you there?!

Hi Gill - when I was Head of L&D, I set up a programme for my team where every 6 months, in a team meeting, the team would list all the topics/areas that they would like to learn more about. Each member of the team would then take on one or two of these topics to go away and research, then plan and deliver a short (1/2 hour) training session for the rest of the team at a future team meeting. We would then sechdule in a "learning hour" at each meeting, where two of these 1/2 hour sessions would be run. The great thing about this was that the whole team benefited and people loved the process of going away and learning for themselves then sharing their learning with the rest of the team. As a result of our success, the idea was implemented in other teams across the organisation (with varying degress of success!!)

Hope this helps

Hi Gill,

At a previous company where I worked we used to hold monthly / quarterly competitions to see who used the most resources or developed themselves the most by availing themselves of the resources. Once people thought they would receive an award, uptake increased. You could vary this theme by possibly having open days to show the resources available to them, attend team meetings to show the resources available. Perhaps offer team incentives, tied to their training budgets if they have one!

Hope this helps ideas to flow!
