Tuesday Insight - Making the Case for Chocolate!

For many of us, Easter involves eating too much chocolate. To be honest, I never need very much encouragement on that score! But could there be a serious point to chocolate in the training room? Sugar, we know, isn’t a great choice for learning, but perhaps chocolate has other merits that might warrant its place in a training exercise. For a bit of fun, I thought I’d make the case for including chocolate somewhere in your training.
  1. If we want people to remember our training, then we need to make it fun, different, unusual and involving. Is it a coincidence that I remember one particular leadership course where the tutor dished out boxes of Smarties as rewards for engagement and for taking risks? Using games and small prizes in training help to make it memorable - it doesn’t have to be chocolate of course, but on the other hand, is there a better prize?
  2. Learning that involves all the senses is more likely to stick. Whilst we’re great at involving the vision and hearing, and to some extent touch – especially if you use toys like our Fiddle Packs - taste and smell are often overlooked as memory ‘tools’. Try now to think about a taste or smell that recalls a powerful memory. I bet you can think of one. And, of course, chocolate has that taste and smell. Oh, I’ve just remembered there’s a box open somewhere…
  3. Learning experiences that we enjoy are those that we are more likely to carry with us and want to share with others.  ell, fortunately for me, chocolate releases chemicals that make us happy, so what better way to inject some fun!
So, with chocolate very much on my mind, I’ve trawled through Trainers’ Library and identified those exercises that involve, or can involve, this delicious, dark, smooth delight. (And, this week and next week only, when you’d download our free samples, you’ll get ‘Chocolate! Teamwork or Competition’ absolutely free!)

Chocolate! Teamwork or Competition: A fun exercise that makes the important point about the value of sharing knowledge and teamwork across teams.

The Wheel: This short game is, for me, one of the most powerful ways to illustrate silo mentality and demonstrate how Together, Everyone Achieves More.

Sweet Talking – Influencing Others: Another short icebreaker that provides a fantastic introduction to sales and negotiation skills
training.

New Event:
Following the success of recent in-house creative training courses, I’ve scheduled an open workshop in Bristol for the 6th July at the very price of £195.00, or £145.00 for Trainers' Library members! Why not come along and pick up lots of tools, tips and techniques for creating training that your participants will love and remember! Fun and learning guaranteed!
