Hi All,

I am currently devising a workshop on Career Management. I am looking for a couple of exercises to enhance the workshop on the following areas:

• Transferable Skills- An exercise where people identify the skills that they use in their role, or a comparison of two job role at different levels which show similarities in the skills that they use.

• Networking- I currently finish the workshop with delegates identifying their networks but feel the workshop needs a higher finish. I didn’t know if anybody has used an activity which allows delegates to practice their networking skills.

Any ideas/suggestions would be gratefully received.

Amelia

Hello

Not sure if this is too late, but on the networking side it is worth looking at some of the work by John Stepper on Working Out Loud (WOL) - which talks in particular about growing online networks around career or personal goals. His website has videos and resources. He has free guides for WOL groups - maybe people could consider forming their own group and taking it forward?

Hi Clare and Frances,

Thank you both for your suggestions. I will have a look at both.

Hi Amelia,

Transferable skills: The best resource by a country mile is still Build your Own Rainbow - I have owned several copies over the years because, whenever I loan these out, they are never returned.

If you want an exercise, the simplest thing is collect a wide variety of job specs/ads, remove salary, job titles and other such identifying material and ask people to choose those which fit their own skills. This is after they've defined their own skill sets and/or chosen cards which reflect these. (Explained this topsy turvy, but I'm sure you get the idea.) Most jobs ask for the same set of skills, whatever the job.

Hope this helps.

Warm regards
Clare

Hi Amelia - thanks for the question.

I would be interested to know what other people suggest on Transferrable Skills as we don't have anything specific on that in the library. One idea that occurs to me is to give them the CV of a 'friend' of theirs who is asking for help with applying for a promotion in another company. Their job is to compare the CV with the JD and help identify which skills/experiences they've got that will help demonstrate that they are a suitable candidate. You'll need to ensure that the 'friend's' CV will need to detail what they've achieved and not simply their roles and responsibilities.

As for networking skills, have you seen Making Connections (https://www.trainerslibrary.com/user_area/materials/training_doc_details.aspx?doc=1696&area=4)?

My idea is that you could start the day running the exercise in this format. Then end the session running the exercise again but this time with different information they need to find out about the other person related to what they have learnt and experienced during the day and in particular what skills are making this exercise easier the second time around. That way the exercise serves a double purpose of helping them practice their networking skills and the reflect on the training as a whole.

I look forward to seeing what other people suggest.

All the best

Frances
