Interesting topic - I've certainly never considered Barclays Life Skills until now- but they are exactly what I was looking for for my Apprentices. |

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to respond to my question. There doesn't appear to be a definitive answer as to how we can satisfy the 20% off job activities, without incurring additional payroll costs, but I live in hope and will await additional responses with interest!

Hi Elaine, I find Barclays Life skills a great resource for apprentices, it is targeted at young people/apprentices, I think up until 19 years (ish). Not only do they have great employability resources there is also skill development around problem solving, coding etc. The apprentices will have to register to join. I'm sure you could register too as an apprentice provider. |

Hi Elaine, We are also struggling with of the job requirements. Our provider has told us we can include any induction and on-boarding training and attending meetings outside of there normal role could also be used but we still need to source some innovate ways of taking people away from their actual job. I'll too will follow with interest. John |

Hi Elaine. I feel your pain too. I wish I could offer suggestions for you however the company I work for is also finding it difficult to take on apprentices for this very reason; departments simply don't have the resources to cover employees who would be away from their role on such a regular basis. I will follow this discussion closely. |

Thanks for taking the time to respond Niki. I've started to compile a list of activities colleagues can complete, however it keeps coming back to the issue/cost of paying someone else to undertake their role, whilst they are completing these off job activities. I work in the hospitality industry, but feel sure this is an issue being faced by many. Thanks again.

Hi Elaine. I feel your pain. We are about to go back to the drawing board on this topic and are going to ask the line manager to consider how they plan to help the apprentice meet the off job element. We do have a large e-learning suite of courses that a person can opt to do to help them develop knowledge linked to the standards/framework they are working towards and then discuss with their line manager and plan how develop the skills. I also looked on the NAS site and there is a guide on ideas on how employers can meet this requirement. This is very general but not knowing your business i dont want to ream off ideas - recently i realised that a person attending a meeting they might not usually go to can be a useful 20% tool (if relevant to the apprenticeship). i am also looking at people finding short articles or You Tube clips to read/watch to help aid their learning (so long as relevant). I will watch with interest on other posts! Niki |
