Hello

I am looking for some materials/advice on a session that could be done with a new and still forming team. Circa 10/12 people for a couple of hours.
This would allow them to understand one another more, work together well as a team enhancing their relationships and productivity. perhaps there is something they could do on the back of understanding their individual strengths and then exploring that together in a purposeful and engaging way which then allows them to agree some take aways

Thanks for the responses asking me to share ColourBlind and the Red/Blue exercise. ColourBlind is a team building game you need to purchase so it depends on budget. The team is blindfolded before the shapes are divided amongst them and asked to identify the colour and shape of missing pieces from a whole set from which you have removed 2 pieces. The only question you as the facilitator can answer is "What colour is this?". For the other exercise I'll need email addresses as it is a word document. I can send with some instructions although it is so simple to run but very effective.

Dear Malc, Good morning. Do you mind sharing the colorblind exercise? Kind regards,

Pam - in the past I have given teams some pre course work to do a little research on team stages. I found this a useful starting point as they begin to look at tasks and behaviours at each team stage as well as the role of the leader. I have then used an exercise called Red/Blue as an ice breaker which is a great way to start a team session (I can mail you instructions if you wish just let me know). After that any exercise that gets them working together leaving you to observe and feedback on behaviours and the characters - who is doing what, who is hiding, who picks up leadership etc. One exercise I love is ColourBlind and I've found they cant hide their frustration with others so it brings out some real behaviours with great learns on what their individual responsibility was for successfully completing the exercise. Sounds like you have a great challenge so good luck with it. Malc

Hi Pam, A great activity that i use time and time again is the spaghetti tower challenge - 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 metre of masking tape and 3 marshmallows - who can build the tallest tower. It is a great activity for colleagues to admire creativity/leadership but as an observer you see peoples strengths/areas of development. Here is a link that i use to refresh - https://learning-resources.sciencemuseum.org.uk/resources/spaghetti-structures/

Hi Pam - thank you for posting this request. I really look forward to hearing what other ideas members suggest.

In the meantime, the great news is that we have got loads of suitable options, so here are a taster of them for you to consider.

The Art of Teamwork - https://www.managerslibrary.com/search-activities.aspx?search=the%20art%20of%20teamwork

I was really pleased to see that you had a Managers' Library licence too because this is a brilliant exercise to help team's understand one another more. in fact there are loads of quick and fun activities for teams like this in Managers' Library. This is the link that you need:

As for Trainers' Library, the first place that I would suggest you looking is our Team Games (https://www.trainerslibrary.com/materials/category_docs_auto.aspx?area=6).

There are loads to choose from depending upon the specific challenges that the team are facing. A couple that I think may be especially helpful are:

A Bridge Too Far? - https://www.trainerslibrary.com/materials/training_doc_details.aspx?doc=427

The Wheel - https://www.trainerslibrary.com/materials/training_doc_details.aspx?doc=2

Breaking Out of Our Boxes - https://www.trainerslibrary.com/materials/training_doc_details.aspx?doc=1748
We have a number of different exercises designed to help team members get to know one another, but this is one of my favourites and triggers some really interesting insights.

One Hump or Two? - https://www.trainerslibrary.com/materials/training_doc_details.aspx?doc=247
A great exercise if you want to relax and energise people at the same time. It always generates loads of laughter and fits nicely with the theme of helping the teams' performance to improve.

Sorting Out - https://www.trainerslibrary.com/materials/training_doc_details.aspx?doc=1734
The theme of this exercise is all about how much more effective it is if we speak directly to our colleagues. Although officially designed for remote teams, the message is important for almost all teams.

Where is this Team? - https://www.trainerslibrary.com/materials/training_doc_details.aspx?doc=1687
A great way to close the session as it focuses specifically on the changes that the team needs to make moving forward. An alternative option is Happy (Half) Hour!:

I hope that these ideas are useful to you, as I mentioned, they are just a small sample of the options available. If you want more ideas or have any questions, please do let me know and I will be happy to help.

All the best

Frances
