Notes: If you’d prefer to read the story to participants, we suggest that you rehearse reading it aloud a few times prior to delivery. This module has been endorsed by Show Racism the Red Card. "Having used the Witches of Glum activity for many years as part of our anti-racism training, we are yet to find an activity that so clearly and successfully demonstrates the power of external influence and unconscious bias on every single one of us. Not only is it suitable to use as a fun introduction to a very challenging topic such as racism, it is also extremely versatile and accessible to a wide range of ages. We will continue using Witches of Glum to challenge stereotypes and assumptions and would recommend it to anyone who wants to deliver a fun and engaging, but meaningful activity. This is a brilliant exercise and a fundamental part of our training!" This is a great fun activity with a lot of important points that can be highlighted in relation to listening skills, assumptions and our own unconscious biases. You can even see examples of 'group think' if you use online 'polling software' as you can observe people changing their answers as the activity progresses.
It's easy to run and even if people know what to expect (which they generally won't) the exercise still works to show how we make decisions on information we think we heard - but didn't!
Works well as an icebreaker or as a wider session on attention to detail or listening skills and also any other skill that relies on listening closely and not making assumptions such as coaching.
Highly recommended.

Great bite size session encouraging participants to recognise their options of speaking up even when they may find it a challenge. Noting that nothing will change unless they find a way to discuss (in the right way) with the correct people.

I used this activity at a networking event to get the participants to understand how their behaviour affected others. It was interesting to listen to the discussions afterwards.
What I did realise is, having used this exercise with a team as well, that it works better in an organisation where people know each other and work together. The timing was right for this exercise and it works with 4 plus people

It was easy to facilitate and brought about some interesting and engaging conversations following the questions.

You'll Need: • A delivery method that allows participants to give non-verbal reactions, as in Zoom. Your participants will need to understand how to do this. (Although we do provide a work around if this isn’t possible.)
Notes: This module has been written from a UK perspective. Body language can be interpreted very differently in different regions of the world. There are two ways to run this activity. The first is a lively and engaging competition, with lots of noise that might not be appropriate for all groups. This requires access to our videos and is best for customers whose membership allows them to pre-download the video, rather than stream it. The other is a discussion-based activity, which utilises breakout rooms. Choose the one that is best suited to your group.

Got introduced to this on an online session with Rod. Tried for the first time in a physical class setting. A great activity that allows learners to both problem solve and see how communication can become more effective by reducing barriers (which in turn helped our discussion on the subject afterwards). Already have a plan to use it again.

I used this with a team in which some people knew each other quite well whilst others were new to the team and it was a very good short icebreaker.
I would definitely recommend a small prize for the most unusual 'something in common' to invite a little more creative thinking. One or two came back with 'we work for the same company' / 'we all work remotely' so it might need a little encouragement to think more deeply.
It works well as an alternative to everyone introducing themselves at the start of a meeting/workshop; my team enjoyed it.

This is one of my favourite icebreakers. I use it to start a Conflict Management workshop, it's a great way to demonstrate that everyone can find something in common, even if they have only just met, and how that helps breaks down barriers.

Useful For: Staff at all levels.
You'll Need: • To ask participants in advance of the training to share one unusual fact about themselves.
Notes: Based on the UK gameshow ‘Would I Lie to You?’, this is a fun way to introduce any training, but is particularly appropriate as an introduction around training linked to communication and body language. It can even be used to introduce equality and diversity training as it provides a way to make the point that there is more to people than we see on the surface and for participants to make assumptions about others in the group.
