This is a great little exercise that I have used in leadership programmes that I've done. I give each delegate a plastic beaker and a stack of Poker Chips. They are told to put a chip in the cup every time their mind wonders or if they have a negative thought about what is being discussed. That is all I tell them to start with.
As a trainer it can be a little off putting / daunting to start with, particularly if you hear a clatter of chips all at the same time but you get used to it. At the end of the day we discuss what the chips represent and add up the time lost to negative thinking. It is a real eye opener for a lot of the people I have trained.
A good, simple exercise, just make sure you have plenty of chips!
