I used 'course introduction' with a group on a departmental awayday. This really focused participants on the rationale for the day and allowed the groundrules to be discussed in a way that wouldn't have happened otherwise. The 'expectations of each other' allowed discussion of acceptable and desirable behaviour to be clearly stated in a department where several staff members are overbearing and dominatiing in such meetings usually. The main content of the day was more fruitful once this had happened.

About
Time: This exercise will take about 5 minutes to complete. In total, allowing for discussion, we recommend allowing 15 minutes for completion (see notes).
Aims: • To give participants an opportunity to feel for themselves how stressful procrastination can be.
Group Size: This module can be used with groups of up to 25 participants.
Useful For: Staff at all levels.
You'll Need: • Enough identical, plain wrapped chocolates, for there to be one per participant. • A jug of water and a glass (on standby for dramatic effect).
Notes: This module involves a simple ‘side’ activity that continues throughout the workshop/course with the discussion at the end. Chocolate coins will work well for this exercise as they just need to be simple pieces of plain or milk chocolate that look identical, but your participants will think something quite different.

I think this is a brilliant way to highlight procrastination and the link to fear. I will definitely be using this activity in my next course.
I wanted to add the suggestion of an alternative. It may be worth asking delegates firstly if there are any food allergies amongst them. Chili is a known trigger for allergies. As an alternative it may be worth considering informing the attendees that one of the chocolates/sweets has an unpleasant taste rather than a chili based flavour. Looking forward to using this activity.

I firstly used Time Is Money to get them thinking about how they prioritise things. It was interesting to see what things people wrote down at first. Some wanting to be extravagant and blow it all and others thinking about putting the money into their savings for a rainy day. This told us a lot about people already and their approach to life. Which was good as it also worked as another icebreaker as they haven’t known each other very long. Next I asked them to complete the second half of the exercise and then asked them how they prioritised and how they made their decisions. We then discussed prioritisation and how it relates to their job role as a group and we went through the urgent/important matrix.

I recently used this exercise as an introductory icebreaker with a group of managers and team leaders. I wanted to emphasise the importance of time in relation to prioritising and better work planning. The exercise was fun and enjoyable to facilitate whilst still giving the important messages I required. Feedback from the participants was that they enjoyed the exercise and it related very well to how things happen on a day to day basis so they were able to identify with it.

I use this activity in Time Management which works very well... The activity links very well to Time Management and it is a fun activity to use as an icebreaker or as a short exercise if you don’t have much time. I would strongly recommend using this for Time Management because people always mention it in their feedback.

I would just like to draw attenion to the 'Time is Money' exercise. I recently used this with a group who were just completing a personal development course and the reaction was terrific; really got them thinking... Excellent. Highly recommed this if you want trainees to think about how they use their time and focus on prioitising tasks or personal development.
