This exercise is brilliant. I have run it several times with sales teams. Such was it’s success that one of the senior managers ran the exercise with Directors to demonstrate the need for fun (particularly in tough times) and to inject innovation into a routine meeting. When running this I have used the sales teams' managers as the zoo owner which can sometimes be difficult due to the laughter!!! You may want to bring in an ‘outsider’ to act as the zoo owner depending what you want to get out of the exercise/day. This is particularly useful for teams who have been in a similar role for some time. It requires you to think from a different angle and re-think your questions and approach which can be very powerful. The 1st time I ran this exercise one of the sales people pulled out a lion. When it came to the presentation he took on the role of the lion and conducted the whole thing clawing and snarling when things weren’t going his way. It was hysterical and needless to say he won the prize for the most innovative approach!! A continuing theme was the significance placed on why the zoo owner had made his purchase. Very few people asked that question. Perhaps an indication of people in a ‘rut’?

I used 'course introduction' with a group on a departmental awayday. This really focused participants on the rationale for the day and allowed the groundrules to be discussed in a way that wouldn't have happened otherwise. The 'expectations of each other' allowed discussion of acceptable and desirable behaviour to be clearly stated in a department where several staff members are overbearing and dominatiing in such meetings usually. The main content of the day was more fruitful once this had happened.
