9:15 AM Barriers to Communication

This module is expected to last for 75 minutes

Aims:
• To identify key barriers to effective communication.
• To explore why such barriers occur.
• To identify 'good practice' principles that will help to avoid the barriers to effective communication identified.



Notes
Before running this first module, introduce participants to each other and go over the objectives for the course.

10:45 AM Building Rapport with Subordinates

This module is expected to last for 40 minutes

Aims:
• To demonstrate the importance of taking a step back and understanding our role in the relationships we have with others at work.




11:25 AM Goldilocks - A Listening Exercise

This module is expected to last for 20 minutes

Aims:
• To test listening skills.
• To illustrate the dangers of making assumptions.
• To encourage participants to think about how they can check their understanding of information they receive.




11:50 AM Jigsaw Race - An Introduction to Communication

This module is expected to last for 20 minutes

Aims:
• To test participants' communication skills.
• To demonstrate the importance of breaking complex messages down into key points.
• To illustrate the difficulties of communicating using only the voice.




12:15 PM Lunch
1:15 PM Glasstap Sheep Trials - An Exercise in Communication and Continuous Improvement

This module is expected to last for 30 minutes

Aims:
• To test participants' planning and communication skills.
• To demonstrate the importance of listening and using summary and clarification to check understanding.
• To consider what makes communication effective and the dangers of getting it wrong.
• To energise a group of participants.

2:00 PM Questions, Questions - An Exercise in Effective Communication

This module is expected to last for 20 minutes

Aims:
• To encourage participants to gather information about each other.
• To illustrate the importance and benefit of open questions when gathering information.
• To illustrate the uses of closed questions.



Notes
After this activity, give participants the opportunity and space to reflect on the different aspects of communication they have worked on so far. Encourage them to make their own notes and to start thinking about where they could improve their own communication skills.

3:00 PM A Welsh Holiday - Testing Communication Between Teams

This module is expected to last for 75 minutes

Aims:
• To help participants develop their communication skills and in particular their listening skills, their ability to share information effectively and their ability to explore problems objectively.
• To illustrate the importance of teamwork and develop the skills needed to work effectively with other teams – particularly where teams are small and geographically diverse.
• To understand that effective teamwork involves identifying and capitalising on all of the unique skills and talents of individuals within the team.




4:15 PM Sweet Review

This module is expected to last for 15 minutes

Aims:
• To encourage participants to review the learning and remind themselves of key learning points or action points from the course or workshop.
