Decision Making Approaches


This exercise will take about 30 minutes to complete. In total, allowing for discussion, we recommend allowing 60 minutes to complete this module.

• To help participants understand how, and the extent to which, they involve others in the decision making process.
• To help participants identify whether the decision making approaches currently used are the most effective.
• To consider the pros and cons of using different approaches in different situations.

Group Size:
This module is suitable for use with groups of up to 15 participants.

You'll Need:
Prepared post-its. Blank post-its of a different colour. Prepared flipcharts.

You will need to familiarise yourself with the handout for this module before running it.

You will need to prepare a sheet of flipchart paper for each participant. Each sheet should be divided into 5 sections, headed as follows:
• Tell.
• Persuade.
• Consult.
• Negotiate.
• Devolve.

You will need to prepare a set of 10 post-its for each participant. The post-its should be prepared with the following words:
• Dismissing a member of staff.
• Introducing a new process or service.
• Changing an existing process.
• Introducing flexi-time.
• Restructuring the team.
• Introducing an 'out of hours' service.
• Hiring a new member of staff.
• Arranging training.
• Team objectives for the year.
• Replacing equipment.
