I used this activity for a team today! It went really well and especially so close to Christmas. I used as an icebreaker at the start of a team building session. It was great at getting people to open up and to be reflective.

Notes: Nature can be a powerful metaphor for learning. It is, after all, in a constant state of change, growth and renewal and it’s full of symbiotic relationships. There are clear parallels here with the workplace where success is often dependent on teamwork, where change is constant and where communication, learning and adaptability are essential skills. This can be a particularly powerful activity to use with new managers to encourage them to reflect on their place in the team and the skills they need to develop but it can be used in other situations too, where some self-reflection might be valuable.

An "oldie but a goodie". I've used this type of approach many times as an introduction exercise. I do, however, like the idea of using it as a review at the end of a piece of learning, and don't know why I didn't use this in this way before. Just shows, need to be pushed out of your comfort zone to think more widely than just using the same things for the same things time and time again. This has pushed me to consider how can I use/adapt this and other similar exercises in a different way.

I used this with a team in which some people knew each other quite well whilst others were new to the team and it was a very good short icebreaker.
I would definitely recommend a small prize for the most unusual 'something in common' to invite a little more creative thinking. One or two came back with 'we work for the same company' / 'we all work remotely' so it might need a little encouragement to think more deeply.
It works well as an alternative to everyone introducing themselves at the start of a meeting/workshop; my team enjoyed it.

This is one of my favourite icebreakers. I use it to start a Conflict Management workshop, it's a great way to demonstrate that everyone can find something in common, even if they have only just met, and how that helps breaks down barriers.

Useful For: Staff at all levels, especially those with managerial responsibilities (or participants who soon will have).
You'll Need: • The Activity Link and your PIN.
Remote/Virtual Delivery: Remote Delivery requires a system that as an absolute minimum provides the following functionality: • Face-to-face discussion. • Share screen. • Chat. • Share files. In addition, we strongly recommend using a system that provides for: • Polls/Quizzes (not required). • Breakout Rooms (required). • Collaborative Whiteboard (not required).
