This is a really good activity and gets people thinking differently. It can be a difficult one to manage if numbers of learners suddenly change but thats just another example of problem solving

I love the Trainers' Library wordsearches! I usually use them at the end of a training session to bring the session to a close. I give individuals a few minutes to find as many words as they can and then have them come up to the flipchart to mark a word on the large copy and tell the group a bit about the item they've marked, in this case why that thing is linked to/important for Change Management.

I used 'course introduction' with a group on a departmental awayday. This really focused participants on the rationale for the day and allowed the groundrules to be discussed in a way that wouldn't have happened otherwise. The 'expectations of each other' allowed discussion of acceptable and desirable behaviour to be clearly stated in a department where several staff members are overbearing and dominatiing in such meetings usually. The main content of the day was more fruitful once this had happened.

This is my favourite icebreaker and the most flexible for various types of training; those who have completed this say that they hadn’t thought about what success had really meant to them before and [the exercise] helped them in the training to focus on what was important.

I've used this a few times, but most recently, a few weeks ago with a group of newly appointed managers.
This was a great exercise for getting the delegates to consider the qualities and attributes of those leaders that they admire and to explore those qualities and traits in relation to their working environment.
The delegates really got into this activity, describing the meal they would make and the conversations they would have.
This exercise was a resounding success, and I am eager to continue incorporating it in our future training sessions.

Used this as an icebreaker for motivation/employee engagement training for managers. It was invigorating, fun and confirmed that we can all achieve more than we thought. Everyone really enjoyed this exercise and was energised to start the training. I did change it to post it notes and gave everyone 3 which they put their initials on and then had to put it as high as possible - everyone doing there first one and then their second etc. Would be a great exercise to use after lunch.

I use Jump as an energiser in any course where I feel that there needs to be some thought on being successful; it works well every time so long as you are in a room with a high ceiling. Double check the height of the delegates when they arrive because I did have one person who was 6ft 2. Everyone not only enjoys the task but they learn from it as well... It works every time!

This activity was such great fun and it got the delegates interacting from the very start of the workshop.
It was interesting to see which animals had been chosen and allowed these new managers to open up and talk about their reasons for choosing this animal in a safe environment.
Great activity and very easy to facilitate.

Used this one as a reminder of what we had covered. There was a 3/4 month gap between batches of training. Placed it as self reflection as looked at (as the exercise suggests) traits and behaviours of an animal. Had 3 groups and gave them two animals each. We looked at traits etc and had great discussion on common ground and how their teams see them. Great short to the point exercise.

Excellent resource & a great little icebreaker. I didn’t run this as a 40 minute exercise. I ran it as a 10 minute exercise at the beginning of the second week of Leadership to remind people what we were talking about with regards to Leadership. I altered it to each small group - took 2 animals (btw great pictures, thanks) and then could choose one to review. The first time I ran it, the groups took too long, so the next time I chose the Tortoise and gave 3 pros & 3 cons, to show the groups that they don’t’ need to over-think this simple, but fun exercise. I felt the participants found the exercise amusing, but useful as well when they related it back to Leadership Styles.

I used this module along with 'A is for Apple' and 'The Ineffective Meetings' video as part of an in house Leadership Development Programme for a mixed group of 10 junior/middle managers and the response was fantastic. They found the simple acronym 'APPLE' easy to understand and implement into their daily working environment. The video that accompanied 'The Ineffective Meeting' was very good although they did find this quite long but definitely worth watching (make sure you have good speakers). What was particularly useful was that they all became very aware of how costly the meetings they were holding had become to the organisation and the introduction of 'APPLE' could not have come at a better time for them. An excellent combination, thank you Glasstap.

Notes: Nature can be a powerful metaphor for learning. It is, after all, in a constant state of change, growth and renewal and it’s full of symbiotic relationships. There are clear parallels here with the workplace where success is often dependent on teamwork, where change is constant and where communication, learning and adaptability are essential skills. This can be a particularly powerful activity to use with new managers to encourage them to reflect on their place in the team and the skills they need to develop but it can be used in other situations too, where some self-reflection might be valuable.

A great exercise to use towards the end of a programme (as a means of allowing participants to demonstrate the right behaviours, rather than as an exercise to catch them out).
I have found that allowing participants 20-30 minutes planning is worth doing and gives plenty of opportunity to observe behaviours for feedback.
Don't be surprised if they find a different solution to the one in the materials. My groups have found a solution that involves people moving backwards sometimes but this isn't prohibited in the rules. Splitting the group into two teams is good (1-6 and 7-12)as they often come up with different solutions and then have to agree on one.
It is also worth having post-its of different colours available for them to model and mouse mats (£1 each from Ikea) make excellent stepping stones.

Great exercise for demostrating teamwork (or not)!
I have found this exercise to be really effective at introducing the difference between a team and group, when delivering leadership training. Not only does it get the participants doing something first thing, it also provides an example to link theory and reality.

Hi there - I used this Icebreaker in a staff meeting of about 40 people and embedded the activity throughout the meeting, getting presenters to ensure they used the positive words we posted on the flip chart whilst presenting, and encouraging all staff who provided comment throughout the meeting to also incorporate the positive words in their commentary. Each staff member had a party whistle to blow when someone used a positive word. It was great fun - and all of the positive words were used at least once. I got lots of positive feedback about it afterwards so highly recommended as a really engaging activity.

Notes: This icebreaker is really only suitable for use when running in-house training with an established team. To make it more credible, we suggest running this activity immediately after a break (and make sure you’re absent from the learners for part of that break). It works best when it is followed up with Describing Your Glass - Optimism vs Pessimism , as that module focuses on the positive steps that can be taken to develop optimism as a skill.

I have used this activity regularly where i want people to understand the importance of giving constructive feedback, it is a fun activity which helps break my session up as i am discussing a serious topic overall; it just allows delegates to understand it well from a different concept. It is definitely important to ensure you pick the right person to receive the negative feedback- i always explain to the person (not the whole group) that i need to use roleplay and are they ok with me being negative towards them- they don't know the concept of the exercise but i think its best to pre-warn the person.

I have used this exercise a few times in training sessions on coaching and running 1-1 reviews. The role play element is quite fun to do but as the notes say you do need to pick your "victims" with care. Having examples of "feedback" to discuss makes it much easier and involving individuals from the group allows you to focus on how they felt about the feedback. On the whole, a fun exercise to open a session about giving feedback.
