Notes: This module looks at intra-personal intelligence - self-awareness - and the ability to notice and regulate or manage our own emotional state or mood. It is important to have an understanding of emotional intelligence and the effects of discussing it with a group of participants. You will find Mike Bagshaw’s Article in Trainers’ Library useful for this.

I chose this content as part of a face to face workshop for Emotional Intelligence which was aimed at a middle management audience. The course was then changed to virtual but the first thing I would say is how easy it was to adapt to virtual delivery.
I used breakout rooms and ran part 1 of the activity first, then brought them back together for discussion and explanation of part 2 of the activity, then put them back into their rooms.
The timings were spot on, I do think it may have took less time face to face but it still worked really well, they loved it!
I did an evaluation on Microsoft forms and here are some of the comments;
"Be very good for any leaders"
"Very good interaction and well delivered"
"Good training content and very relevant for my role"
I also had an email from a manager to say that we should roll this out at all levels - Thank you ! Trainers Library for supporting our learning ??

When I chose this activity, I wasn't sure how well it would work since it relies on the participants to really build the content and outcomes without providing lots of information about emotional intelligence (you can of course add other content!) and I was pleasantly surprised with the outputs.
It 'builds' nicely to encourage thinking through our emotions, effects of external (and internal) factors and what this means in a work context. With a final section (the most important?) on what steps we can all take to 'manage our emotions' in work and become more self-aware.
A nice introduction to emotional intelligence and self-awareness that can be used as a 'stand alone' workshop or part of a bigger programme of personal development.

Useful For: This module is ideally suited for use in an established team that have been through a transformational change. It is not recommended for use with individuals who have or are going through a personally traumatic experience, where professional counselling, or other external support is likely to be appropriate. Always consider where in the change curve people are and whether they are emotionally ready to reflect on the experience they have been through before using this module. If they are still in the Shock or Anger phases of emotional response, this module is unlikely to be useful. (For more information on this, please refer to Sarah’s Change .)

It was developed in response to the pandemic of 2020 but may be useful in a range of situations where teams are experiencing, or have experienced, transformational change. I used this exercise today with a mixed group of managers and it went down really well. I did find it needed more time in the feedback part as lots were being shared and good best practices too.
I would use this exercise again as it was so productive and really got the participants engaged and learning off each other.
