Tuesday Insight: Networking for Mutual Benefit

Sometimes, the training role can be a pretty lonely one. Many of us work alone, or in small teams, where we’re expected to be creative and yet don’t always have the ability to bounce ideas around with others who share our love of Learning and Development.

And, let’s be honest, we can be pretty poor at practicing what we preach when it comes to our own continued professional development. We find it difficult to find the time, or, if we’re a self-employed trainer, we might be reluctant to spend money on learning new skills or meeting potential clients.

Yet, when I reflect on the time I’ve spent building Glasstap (close to 20 years now!) I know that the time and money I’ve invested in my professional development and on networking have been some of the best investments I’ve made. Indeed, I would not be where I am today were in not for the network of professional friends that I’ve developed along the way. (I started to name names here, but quickly realised that I was seriously at risk of missing someone off – so I shall simply say thank you to everyone who has contributed over the years to my professional development and to the development of Glasstap and Trainers’ Library, including, of course, our customers!)

It’s because Networking is so important that we’ve not only introduced Opportunities, but our new not-for-profit* Networking Events too, and why we’re giving everyone the opportunity to have a membership package that includes free access to one of these events every year. (Please contact us for details.)

Our Networking Events are short, packed, days where customers from both sides of the supply fence (self-employed and internal training teams) can meet, exchange ideas, pick up new techniques and learn new skills. They’ll give you an opportunity to see and experience new training activities, and there’ll be ‘learning sessions’ covering a range of interesting topics. (If you’re a self-employed trainer, we encourage you to apply to host one of these – we still have about three sessions left in our first two Networking Events to fill.)

And when it comes to continued professional development, we’re giving all of our Full and Pro customers the opportunity to claim one half-price place on our Creative Training Essentials training next year. Not only will this one-day course give you new ideas and skills you can use immediately; it’ll help maximise the value you get from your Trainers’ Library membership too.

Our motto has always been ‘enabling trainers’ and that’s as much about connecting people as it is giving you a library of outstanding training materials.

Ultimately, the success of these new events is dependent upon you, and your willingness to get involved. Will you help us make Trainers’ Library the best network of professional trainers in the world?

Until next time...

*Any profit made after costs, including staff and travel costs, will be donated to charity.
