The Ineffective Meeting

00:00:18 Krina

I thought this meeting was supposed to start at 10?

00:00:20 Richard

Hmm...pigs might fly.

00:00:22 Mike

I can tell you're new, Krina.

00:00:24 Mike

When Colin sends an e-mail saying a meeting will be at 10, it actually means it won't be before 10, but it'll probably start sometime between 10 and 10.30.

00:00:35 Colin

Yes, well, whilst we're waiting, does anyone fancy taking the minutes this time?

00:00:50 Jill

OK, I'll do them.

00:00:53 Colin

Fantastic.

00:00:54 Stephanie

We're all busy, Richard.

00:00:55 Mike

Yes, we are.

00:00:56 Mike

And I slightly resent the suggestion that we're not.

00:00:59 Mike

We've all been working our socks off these last weeks.

00:01:02 Richard

We'd all be working our socks off a little less if some people just did what they said they'd do.

00:01:07 Mike

I don't know why you're having a go at me.

00:01:08 Mike

As I explained, it's dependent on Ranjit's team, not mine.

00:01:12 Mike

We've done all we can.

00:01:13 Richard

Who conveniently isn't here!

00:01:14 Mike

Oh yes, and we planned that because we thought it's all going to kick off with Richard because next year's holiday planners aren't online.

00:01:24 Mike

And it's already August.

00:01:27 Mike

Well, apart from spending a lot of time verifying the hours worked by part-time staff for Jill's team, which we understood was urgent.

00:01:38 Stephanie

Sorry, I forgot to mention, Sarah's expecting twins.

00:01:45 Stephanie

So, she'll be going on maternity leave sometime after Christmas.

00:01:48 Colin

Thank you very much for that.

(Jill’s phone rings.)

00:01:50 Jill

Sorry.

(Jill leaves to answer her phone.)

00:01:53 Colin

You’re just going to take it now.

00:01:59 Colin

Okay, next on the agenda is Investors in People.

00:02:04 Mike

Well, I've had the consultants' report, which includes a summary of how we're doing against the Investors in People indicators.

00:02:12 Mike

I've prepared a summary of their findings and the key actions that I think need to be taken.

00:02:19 Colin

Fantastic.

00:02:20 Colin

Do you have that with you?

00:02:21 Mike

No, I didn't know it was on the agenda.

00:02:24 Richard

Oh...well, what was the point of it?

00:02:25 Richard

What did we achieve?

00:02:28 Stephanie

There never seems to be a clear purpose to the meetings.

00:02:32 Stephanie

I mean, what did any of us come away with from that meeting that we didn't have when we went in?

00:02:40 Mike

Bad moods?

00:02:43 Stephanie

Mike!

Customer Reviews - The Ineffective Meeting

I have completed this exercise with two groups of 10 managers over the last 6 months and both times the response from the delegates has been tremendous. Very quickly they were able to identify their weaknesses and what improvements they needed to make. There were a few embarrassed giggles at times as the video was a bit too close to home for some of them!! Thank you Glasstap. Jayne Dark

I have been delivering Chairing Meetings training for some time now, trying to draw out the importance of starting meetings on time, having set timed agendas , preparation etc. As one of your gold members I was able to stream the video in my recent training session and it allowed me to facilitate discussion after each scene. All the delegates were able to identify Colin's failings as a chair. They all went away with a clear action plan of how to avoid poor meetings in future.Using the video really stimulated discussion and ideas. A really useful tool. I would rate this a 5.
