We are looking at introducing new Company Values and was wondering whether anyone has anything to share. What worked for you and what did not?

Hi Yusrah We have spent the last 13 months with a company helping them to embed the new, agreed Values in to the business and make them a key part of how the business operates - not simply a nice poster in reception! Do you have the values agreed already and want help to bring them to life, or do you need to establish what they are first? Both are long processes but done well can have a huge impact on both the business and engagement of teams - but it is crucial to involve people. If you would like to know more do email me [email protected] Best wishes Emma

Hi Yusrah, as well as echoing the comments of other members, I would also suggest providing some case studies so that participants can consider how they can use the values to assist with their decision making and appropriate behaviours. I did this in a previous company adn with some clients and it really does help to bring the values to life and enable them to identify and purpose and relevance of the values. Also, if you haven't decided what the Values are yet, I would highly recommend getting employees involved as early as possible rather than just presenting them with a set of 'corporate' values that they may not relate to. Happy to discuss further if you wish. [email protected]. Good Luck!

Yusrah - some great tips so far. When I took a company through this I found it was invaluable to include all staff, not just the managers. The thought behind this was that if managers just introduced new values staff thought this was 'being done to them'. Involving them was a real positive and they did influence the final set of values as they has some great ideas. The fact they were involved meant they understood where the company was coming from and were able buy in to them through their involvement. Best of luck. Malc

Hi Yusrah, I agree with Gary and a quick exercise you can use to help people think about their personal values is feeling cards:

As I was reading your question it occurred to me too that you might be able to get some valuable learning, and bring values to life, using The Card Factory. I'd adapt it this way:

Get the participants in small teams of, say, two to design and make a simple greeting card.
Then ask them what values would help them deliver a better result for themselves and their customers. Once they've agreed their values ask them how they might apply those to the task at hand and encourage them to do that. For example, transparent communication could involve the small teams openly sharing ideas with each other, inclusion could be applied both in the way that teams ensure everyone plays a part but also in the nature of the card itself, innovation could be displayed in the way they approach the task and the finished item etc. etc. etc.

The thing I like about this approach is that it brings values to life and shows how, when they are properly used, they can make a real difference to the way organisations work and the results they produce both for employees and customers. Drop me a line at [email protected] if you'd like to explore this idea further. In the meantime, here's a link to the Card Factory activity:

Yusrah When I introduced this subject to my group of managers, I found it helpful to have them look at their own values first, followed by a look at the organization's values, followed by an activity that had them match their personal values with the organization's values.
